A Fan is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Shobu Yarlagadda. It stars Shah Rukh Khan in the title role of a superfan of the eponymous singer A.R.Rahman who travels to his hometown to meet him after many years of longing. The cast also includes Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone and Aditya Pancholi in supporting roles. Principal photography began in October 2015 in Panchgani, Maharashtra. The film released worldwide on April 15, 2016.The soundtrack was composed by A.R.Rahman with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and Irshad Kamil.Aamir Khan hosted the film's trailer launch event in Mumbai on February 3, 2016. The film earned ₹3.10 crore on its first Sunday taking its first weekend total to ₹42.04 crore nett and a worldwide gross of ₹83.22 crore, becoming the second biggest opener of 2016 after "Sultan" and beating "Rustom"'s lifetime business in just three days. With the excellent hold of 45% on Monday it made a grand total of ₹44.62 crore nett., taking its first week business to new heights with a worldwide total of ₹106. 62 crore nett. By the end of its first week, the film had grossed ₹107.70 crore nett. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Shah Rukh Khan's performance but criticized the script for being predictable and the soundtrack for being too similar to Rahman's own songs. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, "Fan" holds an approval rating of 64% based on 195 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10. The website's critical consensus reads, ""Fan" comes close to Shah Rukh Khan at his most commanding as a Bollywood superstar who learns what it means to be a fan—and finds himself unexpectedly touched by his idol. While the film's execution is a bit pedestrian, its resonance lives on." Metacritic gives the film a weighted average score of 64 out of 100 based on reviews from 36 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Harsha Bhogle from Firstpost praised the performances of Khan and Sharma saying, "Shah Rukh's career-best performance as a middle aged male in his late 30s is as commanding as it gets. Anushka shines as the perfect foil to his football-mad son.
